In 1970s, Joseph Paravally was conducting a small-scale soda
manufacturing unit at Thevara. I have noticed him brush the bottles and rinse
them with water to remove dust particles before filling it with potable water. Carbon
dioxide gas was fed into the carbonator through a pressure regulating valve.
The carbonators were of simple construction, hence, maintenance and repairs
were very easy. The filled bottles were carbonated and due to the air pressure
the round glass piece get automatically corked at the bottle neck. The quality
of his Soda filled in glass bottles were high and contained better gas volumes.
There used to be an opener for such bottles. I have also seen people opening it
by applying their thumb. As the demand increased he started to fill in plain
bottles with metal cork. Later his son took over the business and shifted it to
Kumbalam. His soda was very popular in the nearby areas.
