CHRISTIAN ART FORMS “CHAVITTU-NATAKAM”

The Portuguese formulated a method of entertainment for the Latin Catholics. The folk drama “Chavittu-natakam” was its outcome. While “Kadhakali” is a classical dance drama with signs and expressions, the Portuguese designed a folk drama based on their ballet. It is a rhythmic display of chivalrous stories of kings and warriors. I remember, Kumbalam Peter, Thekkayil Stephan, Thekayil Pappy, Ochira Kunjappan and Kannat Thomas were the main characters in the drama with their regal, rich and gorgeous costumes of king and his warriors.
